This trial is a special case though merle because it is mostly based on a lie conjured up by a conniving misleading tramp. Overall Abigail is a necessary character in the novel because she adds suspense and liveliness to he story because of all of her facades. They allow the reader to take sides in the story and learn to hate her and consider her an enemy. But as the reader is hating her they are actually loving her for all of the character she adds to the pot line.
