The ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were once alive with activity beore the erruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. In 1860 archaeological work revealed people, objects and buildings. The erruption of Mt Vesuvius caused the two towns, Pompeii and Herculaneum, to be perfectly preserved under ash and pumice stones, thus giving archaeologists a fantastic insight into the lives of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Extensive amounts of information can be gathered and comparisons can be made between their society and ours in the present.
