When Atticus stood up for Tom Robinson, Atticus showed a great deal of courage. It shows a lot of courage because in that time that they we living in, African American (black) people weren't respected by others, and it was hard for African Americans to stand up for themselves and to be respected. Lying for Tom was a very brave thing Atticus did, he could have risked many things, and could've never earned respect.
