…the end of the story, Sammy quits his job because he doesn't feel that Lendell should have embarrassed the girls. The symbolic significance of this action wasn't that Sammy quit his job at the A&P, but that he quit the "values" of the A&P. This comes into conflict with the American Middle-Class Values because those are the only values that are accepted in both the A&P and the town.
