During this period the Communists formed a provisional government in the mountains of the north, but they were ultimately defeated with United States aid. The end of the Communist rebellion was decided by Yugoslavia's closing its border with Greece and preventing Soviet-supported guerrilla groups from using Yugoslavia as a base and sanctuary.
