kept garrisons on Cyprus and Rhodes for some centuries. However, the Crusading impulse
was not dead. As late as 1396 a large expedition against the Ottoman Turks in the
Balkans, summoned by Sigismund of Hungary, drew knights from all over the West. But a
crushing defeat at Nicopolis on the Danube River also showed that the appeal
of these ventures far outstripped the political and military support needed for their
success.
