(Beers, p.122) Since slavery was a big part of the civil war, by Jefferson expanding America it gave the people something to fight about. The South was trying to spread slavery all over America but the North wanted to abolish slavery for good. This purchase caused uproar in America, which slowly got split up into free states and slave states.
