All across the country towns were divided in their support of the north or the south. The divisions ran so deep so as even to split families, in some cases pitting brother against brother or father against son. The resulting conflict left scars that lasted many generations in this country, and many historians feel that it is only in the last half century have these wounds begun to heal (Foote 50-55).
