Synthesis and Characterization of (Mesitylene)tricarbonylmol
Abstract: (Mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum and (chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum were synthesized each by different methods. (mesitylene)tricarbonylmolybdenum was produced by a direct method under harsh conditions. (Chlorobenzene)tricarbonylmolybdenum was made by an indirect method under mild conditions.
Introduction
The transition metals chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum commonly form complexes with benzene rings. The metal forms a bond with the six electrons in the ? system of the benzene ring. In this experiment two of such molybdenum complexes are synthesized: (mesitylene)

only be used if the complex being formed is quite stable. Method 2 works well to synthesize complexes that are not incredibly stable. In this case, method 1 was completely successful and method 2 gave in conclusive results. To illustrate a more accurate comparison of the two methods, the complex being produced should be used as a control. This would allow the comparison of yields and purity, which would lend a more accurate analysis of the two methods.
