Although ineffective, the Articles of Confederation outlined the general powers that should be exercised by the central government, such as making treaties and establishing a postal service. As the first written constitution of the Republic, the Articles held the states together. All in all, this first Constitution and new form of government helped to build the foundation for our current Constitution of the United States.
