Napoleon took power in 1799 in a coup d'etat. This ended the chaos that had engulfed France following the Revolution and the Reign of Terror. Within a few years, Napoleon had declared himself emperor and suspended free speech and political freedoms. Napoleon was a man of the revolution, without it he would never have come to power. Because of this, he kept most of the ideals of the revolution intact. He did not allow the French free speech but he allowed them religious toleration, secular education, and access to government jobs based on merit.
