Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in Ajaccio on August 15, 1769. It was by chance that the future ruler of France was born as a French citizen. His christening name, Napoleone Buonaparte, was Italian, and his parents had just immigrated to Corsica from Italy in the 16th century. For a brief time, known as the Hundred Days, Napoleon returned to his former glory. This glory came to an end though at the battle of Waterloo, which was fought on June 18, 1815. Napoleon was defeated for the last time by the English and Prussians.
Napoleon died on the island of St. Helena alone and deserted by his family. On May 5, 1821 his remains were taken to France, where he was buried.
