The two categories are labeled positive and negative symptoms (Tsuang & Faraone, 1997, p.22).
The positive symptom is also known as the acute syndrome or Type I schizophrenia, "The word positive is not used in a complementary way"(Harmon, 2000 p.37). It is more alarming then the other category of schizophrenia. The positive symptoms will increase an individual's activities. The person may have distorted thoughts and actions, which can last anywhere from one to six months (Harmon, 2000 p.37).
