The focus of impressionistic landscapists was to finish the painting as soon as possible, before the possible changes of the lighting caused a difference in the picture. Impressionism also used complimenting colors to depict the shadows rather than using gray or black. The paintings were comprised more so of the light and atmosphere and caused the objects within the paintings to lose prominence.
