Roger was Jack's lieutenant, a sadistic, cruel older boy who brutalizes the littluns and eventually murders Piggy by rolling a boulder onto him.
Each of these boys were put into this story to represent the different aspects of civilization. The boys represented order, savagery, followers and leaders, these roles caused conflict within the group which caused the decline in order from the beginning of the story to the end.
