Inspired by Nature Known as the Quaker Poet, the majority of Whittier's work revolved around around the harsh New England farm life with which he was familiar with. His life on a farm and as a Quaker made fore his reverence for nature and created a setting and theme for most his poetry as well as writing. His voice as a New England framer and villager proved timeless as did his depictions of the nature of this land and its beauty.
