I have found that the taste of the fresh water does change after having the sugar water in my mouth. My taste buds adapted to the sugar water. We have also learned if you have a hand in hot water and one in cold water then stick them both in warm water they feel the opposite from when you started with cold and hot. We have learned that vision is a very strong sensory system and you can see light even through index cards in the dark.
