…iff. What was the Indian Act of 1876? The Act set out the rules that controlled Native communities. Native peoples were already the most regulated people in Canada. Now the Indian act introduced more regulations. Traditional ceremonies, such as the potlatch, were banned. It was decided that Native children must go to residential schools. The government was acting like a parent managing the affairs of children. The government said the Native peoples should move onto reserves.
