Israel is entering a new era in its relationship with its Middle Eastern neighbors and the
international community. The forces shaping these new relationships are far more significant
then the often-overstated ideological differences between the two major political blocs in Israeli

questioning the cost of the racism and intolerance which the occupation of Arab lands has
brought onto Israeli society. The younger generation, in emphasizing the state of Israel rather
than the land of Israel, shows an increasing pragmatism now reflected by some elements of the
Israeli establishment (Zunes 355). Related to this is the belated realization that the Palestinians
are distinct people with their own interest which could be recognized without threatening anyone.
