When Petion died in 1818, Boyer became president of the south and west of Haiti, and when Henri Christophe killed himself in 1820, he united north, south, and west Haiti into one republic, and he became the president. Boyer paid France to officially recognize the republic of Haiti as a country in 1825, by heavily taxing the Haitian people. They became angry, overthrew his government, and exiled him.
