As previously stated esters are a combination of alcohols and carboxylic acids. Carboxylic acids contain a carbon with a single bond to a hydroxyl group and a double to an oxygen and when bonded lose the hydrogen from the hydroxyl group and are then known as alkanoates. Thus the pentanoate turns back into pentanoic acid. This leaves the methyl, which was the alcohol methanol.
