Background
Colombia is the third-most populous country in Latin America, after Brazil
and Mexico. Movement from rural to urban areas has been heavy. The urban population increased from 57% of the total population in 1951 to about 74% by 1994. Thirty cities have a population of 100,000 or more. Their population is about 42 million people with an annual growth of 1.8%. The Republic of Colombia is roughly 1.2 million km in area, or about the size of Texas, Arkansas, and New Mexico
