D.H. Lawrence
Born in the Midland mining village of East-wood, Nottinghamshire, D. H. Lawrence was the son of a coal-miner. His mother was a middle-class woman and school teacher. She was much better educated than her husband and self-consciously genteel. His parents led a bitter married life. From an early age, Lawrence was aware of the struggles between his parents, and was much on his mother?s side.

husband. In 1914-1918, Lawrence?s objection to World War I and his wife?s German origin caused them a lot of trouble with the British authorities. After the war, they led a wandering life, living briefly in Germany, Austria, Italy, England, France, Australia, New Zealand and American. On March 2, 1930, Lawrence died of tuberculosis in the south of France at the age of 44.
