Raskolnikov bases his murder on the idea of utilitarianism. He thinks that moral decisions should be centered on what would be best for the greatest amount of people. In this way he justifies his murder of the old pawnbroker. He feels that by removing her from society he did a good deed. Along with the idea of utilitarianism he completely disregards social conventions by doing what he thinks is beneficial
