In the end, I believe the Union was preserved for the time being. At the risk of separation, Americans pulled together and compromised for the sake of the Union. If this bill would have not gone into effect when it did, a break of the Union would have been earlier than it was. Henry Clay was a great compromiser and was able to keep the union together.
