Both New England and Southern colonies were settled largely by the English. By 1700, the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. New Englanders were very family oriented but Southerners were mainly young men seeking fortune. The governments were either town meetings or county governments causing many differences in political opinions. Because of these reasons the Southern and New England colonies of the New World became two completely different regions.
