She encounters a long lost cousin, St. John Rivers, a missionary, who becomes convinced that Jane is his ideal wife. Jane rejects marriage without love just as love without marriage is unacceptable with Rochester. She ultimately achieves happiness when she reencounters Rochester and they are finally united in matrimony.
