It is widely believed that this war was caused by the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand. That was the spark, but there are many other reasons that led to this war, some occurring as far back the late 1800's. The main factors were, nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and the system of alliances. I do believe that the war was an act of premeditation by the Central powers, especially Germany, by way of their alliance system, …

…and the Germans sense of nationalism was the muscle power behind the war. They were out to prove that they were the strongest country in the world. They purposefully kept France out of any alliances, while making sure they had the most support with Russia. Germany was itching for a war so they could stomp anyone in their paths. They had the option of avoiding it, but went on, knowing the outcome of their decisions.
