The background again has a grungy, dirty, monochromatic tone which adds to the effect of dissuading the audience of war and destructive activities. The way the background has been done is also interesting, with obvious lines and directions in the background. Up the top we see a horizon and under that we see very dominant lines that direct our eyes across the painting.
