Banneker was born November 9, 1731 in a little town near Ellicotts Lower Mills in Maryland. Banneker's grandmother, Molly Walsh was a maid in England. She was sent to Maryland as an indentured servant. When her indenture ended after seven years, Molly Walsh bought a farm. She took along two slaves to help her with the operation of the farm. so the clock chimed on the hour. Benjamin's clock was the first striking clock ever made in America! Benjamin was known as the compiler of an almanac published from 1792 to 1797. It was called "Benjamin Bannekers Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia Almanac and Ephemeriss for the Year Of Our Lord." It contained astronomical calculations and weather predictions. It was the first scientific work of it's kind by a black American. He died at the age of 75.
