Plato's allegory of the cave refers to the development of humans. The story of the cave represents our childhood and coming to grips with reality as we mature. As one matures there are certain subjects and skills one learns in different stages. Successfully mastering those subjects and skills allows one to achieve higher and higher stages in life. Plato was describing progression from childhood to adulthood.
