In the many works of famed and prolific writers, evidence can be found supporting the fact that, for some reason or another, characters often hide who they are with some sort of mask. Jack Merridew from Lord of the Flies, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as David from Breaking away, are all great examples of the phenomenon know n as maskuerading.

Masks can be good or bad depending on how much a person relies on it. No matter if the mask transforms a character into a raving bloodthirsty psychotic, a sensitive poet and spectacular swordsman, or an Italian, bike riding, lady’s man. Everybody uses a mask sometime during the course of their life, and when they do it’s to escape reality or alter society’s perception of them.
