In Latin vocabulary, one word signifies virtue: its meaning is manly valor. Among the many men Pluarch wrote about Coriolanus stood out as being the most virtuous. He fought and thought for others and not himself. The worst example is Cato the Elder. Plutarch didn’t like Cato, so he isn’t well represented. Cato didn’t like Greeks, and Plutarch was a Greek. I think Cato was a hypocrite according to Plutarch’s writing.

Virtue has many meanings. Coriolanus had virtue in fighting as well as in love for his family. Cato came across as virtuous until his real reasons for living the peasant’s life surfaced. Having virtue means living for others, not just yourself. Coriolanus proved it was okay to give up petty attitudes in order to help others. Cato on the other hand lived a false life. He was living for all the wrong reasons.
