Labor Movement
Three dominant labor movements of the century were the American Federation of Labor (AFL) led by Samual Gompers, the Knights of Labor (K of L) led by Terence Powderly, and the International Workers of the World (IWW) led by William Haywood. All three were trying to establish improved ambient factors for working society through atypical approaches.
The American Federation of Labor seemed to be the most dominant of the three unions.

labor union of the time. Failure of the AF of L and the K of L may have been linked to Gomper’s leadership role, weaknesses of Powderly and Haywood, “but it was due more to the presence of other factors-government and big business preferences for AF of L unionism; the
suppression of left wing alternatives; and, perhaps most importantly of all, the ethic and racial fragmentation of the labor force.” (RTAP, p. 17)
