Unlike the idyllic image of life in the 1950s depicted in paintings, literature and music of the time period, the 50s were a much graver decade. What Holden saw, was the glaring hypocrisy in the society he lived in. He recognized the distinct contrast between the superficiality of keeping up appearances by conforming, and the turmoil and repression that lurked beneath the surface. Holden Caulfield’s unique views for the time made him feel isolated and lonely, which eventually led to his breakdown.
