It is not surprising that most of the female writers we have enjoyed this year have
written largely about gender issues, particularly (and obviously) women’s rights to equal
opportunity and equal treatment. However, almost every writer that we’ve read that dealt

even Paule Marshall herself each tell their own special stories, in their
own special languages, with their own special styles, unique to each writer. Not only that, in
the process, they also tell the stories of “black feminine lesbian warrior poets,” Native
American women, African-American women, nineteenth-century oppressed women,
twentieth-century oppressed women, and women that just want to be heard for what they
have to say and how they have to say it.
