it is the one that causes the narrator to experience such thoughts and visions. However, even more destructive to the narrator was the fact that she was constrained from living life and was denied the chance to fulfill her own desires. This is what ultimately stripped her from reality and caused her to create an unconscious world based upon the determination to escape entrapment. The narrator eventually achieves freedom at the expense of her sanity.
