Personal identity is very difficult to define. Everyone has an image in their mind of who they want to be and how they want to lead their lives. By not accepting who they really were, these three characters lead their lives in constant fear that their true identity would be discovered. It is important to accept who you are and be yourself. By thinking that you are not good enough to be with someone who turn yourself into someone that you are not, as the characters in “The Great Gatsby” did.
