What is an awakening? Throughout the novel the Awakening, by Kate Chopin, this term is defined through the actions of the main character, Edna Pontellier. …Edna began her revolt by refusing to go to bed with her husband, and staying outside for the night. Although considered a insignificant incident, it actually began the paving of the road to freedom. Gradually Edna’s rebellions became larger and larger, until she finally takes her own life. In conclusion, this novel symbolically represented the hardships women faced in society, and opened the door for others to follow in Edna’s footsteps of rebellion.
