The battle of Cold Harbor or also known as The Second Cold Harbor is described as one of the bloodiest military combats of the American Civil War. It was a thirteen-day battle and was fought between May 31st – June 12th, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia, northeast of Richmond. The action after the ghastly gamble on June 3rd consisted chiefly of minor scuffles until the night of June 12th, when Grant withdrew from the battle south across the James River. The battle ended the Union drive through the Virginia Wilderness. The total estimated Casualties was 15,500, the Union Army having 13,000 and the Confederate army having 2,500. Cold Harbor proved to be Lee's last major field victory, and established an outcome closing the doors to slavery.
