…attack. The action after the ghastly gamble on June 3rd consisted chiefly of minor scuffles until the night of June 12th, when Grant withdrew from the battle south across the James River. The battle ended the Union drive through the Virginia Wilderness. The total estimated Casualties was 15,500, the Union Army having 13,000 and the Confederate army having 2,500. Cold Harbor proved to be Lee's last major field victory, and established an outcome closing the doors to slavery.
