held back after Grendel tour the geat to shreds. Grendel, too, stopped is his tracks and could not move. They both believed they could defeat another. Grendel’s immediate reaction was to run to his mother crying. This is juvenile, also cute. It lets us see a softer side to Grendel, of which could not be imagined before. Beowulf’s reaction was to run off and brag, also juvenile. Both seem immature at these times.
