St. Basil the Great was a very holy man. As our reading puts it, “He had significant intellectual gifts; yet he showed, beyond intelligence, a wisdom to search out the deep secrets of the mysteries of God.” It was no surprise that Basil grew up to be an excellent ambassador for Catholicism. His family was packed full of great Catholics. His grandfather was a martyr, and his parents, grandmother and three siblings are also saints.

to be good, but I know that I should try to listen to God more often. I probably would not have even thought about it if I had not read this and Basil had not stressed it so much in the letter. Overall, the letter really impressed me and made me think about it. In my opinion, St. Basil’s letter to Gregory is the best and most interesting selection we have read so far.
