Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry takes place during the 1930's in rural Mississippi. The setting of Mississippi has an important effect on the story in that the white people there were very racist. According to World Book Encyclopedia the Jim Crow laws, was developed by Northern states in the 1800's, but was adopted by the Southern states in the late 1800’s. These segregation laws required that whites and blacks use separate public facilities. No detail was too small. At one time Oklahoma required that whites and blacks use separate telephone booths.
