Over the past few weeks we have discussed the issue of race and the many forms of
discrimination into which it can be molded. Whether it is through preconceived stereotypes, racial
slurs, or a general phobia due to ignorance, racial discrimination in the classroom is a problem that
is rarely addressed. Only through teaching racial awareness to our students can we begin to solve
this problem

present in our school system, and with better
understanding and knowledge of the subject, teachers and parents alike can help our children see
beyond the surface of another’s skin. All children are entitled to a learning environment where the
color of their skin does not effect the quality of their education, and only through racial awareness
will we be able to change that from an educator’s ideal into a social reality.
