I believe he said that God is dead to show people that they should live in the now, enjoy life, and quit wasting life waiting to die to pass on into a world that doesn't exist. Nietzche made a good point when he said that Christianity forces people into a slave morality, because they are constantly doing for God, instead of exercising their own will to power.
