The US was presently making ships and needed a place to put them. In 1894, the Navy sent surveyors to check out Pearl Harbor. They found out that it would be easy to dredge the entrance to Pearl Harbor. A naval station was built in May 1899 (“The History Pearl Harbor” p.2).
