Throughout the depression, money was, obviously, low, and people needed ways to entertain themselves. In these times of need, people looked to an old friend, capable of hours of entertainment for a very low price. This friend was the book. Many people refer to the depression as a tragedy, but to someone who truly enjoys and studies the books of the time period, the term acceptable loss is among the first to come to mind.
