The Lincolnshire limestone was laid down by the Sauk Sea. Then the Penobscot Orogeny (collision of Africa with North America) occurred. As the Penobscot Orogeny was causing mountain building, rivers and streams started to erode sediments away. These sediments consisted of clay, silt, and sand.
