The isolation of the island would make it possible for two men to hunt each other as prey, without interference from the outside world. The gloomy climate in the beginning described as, “the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht,” I believe is Connell’s way of foreshadowing the circumstances Rainsford would face.
