The ghost is a symbol that tells Hamlet to not be fooled by Claudius and to be aware that Claudius is committing incest in the royal bed of Denmark. Hamlet is already aware of the fact that Claudius did not mourn the death of his father and instead, insulted him by marrying his wife Gertrude just to become king. Shakespeare uses the ghost’s statement effectively to portray the wickedness of Claudius.
